Hi Appliance Repair Questions, My top load washer is making a super loud grinding sound when running and or agitating. It is ok when it's on any other wash cycle besides agitating mode. When spinning or final rinse it is ok and not making any noise. I am not sure what could be wrong. Is it something that could be stuck somewhere? Maybe something was in a pocket of jeans and fell out? Now it is stuck in my washer and causing this noise? It is a GE washer, about 3 years old.

The cause of the noise is most likely from a bad agitator coupling. Grab the bottom of the agitator and pull straight up. Then remove the bolt on the coupler and pull it off. Inspect the spline of the coupler and see if it is worn. Most likely it will be worn out and this will be the cause of your noisy washer. Make sure to replace it with a genuine GE part so it fits properly. Once replaced, slide the agitator back and test the washer.
