How to fix this washer that is not spinning or draining?

I have an Inglis model (I think it may be made by whirlpool) top loading, part number 3954229. I did a load of laundry and when I came back it had stopped but was full of water. After manually draining some of the water (hose is not plugged) it seemed to work for a short time and then shut off. When I put it to spin empty nothing happens. It worked fine a week ago, possible causes may be: I found a sock underneath the plastic mixing part in the center of the basket, or I recently installed a metal frame around the washer to have my dryer sit on top ( though I don't see how this would affect it). Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.
