We have a 12 year old Kenmore 80 series washer that quit in the middle of a cycle last night. It will agitate but it will not spin or drain. About a year ago a repairman told us it would probably give out in 6-12 months because of the age of the belt and that we should just buy a new one. My question is whether the problem we're having us a belt issue and is it worth fixing? Thanks!

If the washer agitates, then most likely the belt is fine.

Your issue sounds like the lid switch may be bad.

The small button the lid presses when the lid is shut may be burnt out or possibly it has fallen off the bracket.

Do some research on HOW TO REPLACE A LID SWITCH ON A KENMORE 80 SERIES TOP LOADER WASHER.

You can find a replacement lid switch online for around 30 dollars.
