How to fix a clogged garbage disposal drain?

I have an insinkerator. When I run it, the water in the sink is swirled around but does not go down. took off the dishwasher line - no obvious block in the line. There may be crud in the disposal - I can't get at it to see. The drain line was clear. What next?
