How can I fix a washing machine that does not agitate or spin?

I have a whirlpool top loader washing machine.  The washing machine stopped working with clothes and water in the basin. I used the master reset technique and once I did that it did respond when I put it into certain modes.  However the response was either a buzzing or a quick jolt, like the agitator was going to start spinning and then an immediate stop.  The lid switch does clearly engage when you move the lid up-and-down, or at least I can hear it clicking.  Thank you for your help!
