Maytag Performa spins sometimes – Plastic shavings under machine

I bought a Maytag Performa from a friend. It ran fine for a few days. Today it stopped spinning and agitating. It works sporadically. I taped the lid shut to bypass the lid switch and pulled the top up and it spun for one load. Second small load, it wouldnt spin again. I checked the belt and it was fine but there were plastic shavings around it. Checked the grease cap and it looks intact. The machine makes the sound like it wants to spin but just doesnt.
