Diagnosing a GE washer that will not spin problem

Our GE washer WJSE4150B1WW is not completing the spin cycle. It spins for a minute or two, then stops and just hums with a faint burning smell. Based on my online research, I was ready to replace the drive belt. But then I took the front cover off and the belt show no visible signs of wear, (but washer is 12yrs old). Placing the control at Final Spin, the motor and belt seem to be turning fine, but then it you hear a loud click, the motor and belt come to an abrupt halt and it just sits there humming with a faint burning smell. Now this is with no cloths or water in it, but my wife tells me it happens during regular wash cycles too. Could it still be the belt even though it looks like something is purposely triggering the abrupt stop. (Motor fault?) Thank you,Dave

The washer locking up and humming could be a few different problems.

The clutch, transmission, pulley, or brake assembly may be somehow locking up.

The belt and motor are working as normal but something locks them up at a certain stage of the wash.

You will have to take the washer apart and do some troubleshooting.

This sounds like it does not happen all the time so finding the issue may be difficult.

Here is a schematic and a list of the parts we mentioned that may be causing your washer problems…

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/ge-washer-parts/model-WJSE4150B1WW/0432/0153200/G0112094/00004.html
